Charleston is one of the most attractive cities in South Carolina. It was involved in the Civil War, but as there was not much damage inflicted to its properties, it has a well-preserved historic downtown. Because height restrictions were imposed in this city, you will not see any tall buildings. The only things that make the skyline stand out are the church steeples and the fantastic Arthur Ravenel cable-stay bridge. The downtown is located on a peninsula formed by two rivers, the Cooper and the Ashley. The islands surrounding this peninsula protect it from the open ocean. Charleston luxury hotels are yet another aspect that attracts tourist to this impressive city.

The city has a long history, as it was established in 1670 by Anthony Ashley Cooper. As you will notice, the rivers surrounding the downtown bear the name of the founder. From the moment of its foundation, the city has been in continuous development. It is also known as The Holy City, as its numerous churches feature some beautiful ornaments. Charleston was one of the thirteen colonies that tolerated French Huguenots and Jews, from a religious point of view.

People in Charleston are willing to help tourists, including the ones who do not speak English very well. On the other hand, understanding the way locals talk here may prove to be a bit tricky. The dialect used in this city and in the surrounding area involves a southern costal accent, a fact that makes understanding speech a little difficult. However, Standard American or British English speakers will still be able to have conversations with the locals, despite the differences.

Another dialect spoken here, in this case by a minority, is Gullah. Because this English dialect includes West African influences along with Pidgin English and French, it is basically impossible to comprehend by the majority of English speakers. You may also hear Spanish and Portuguese here, as these are the major alternate languages in Charleston. In addition to that, Spanglish, a mix of English and Spanish, is also used by some locals.

Charleston International Airport is one of the best ways to get into this city. Numerous companies operate their flights here, so it is possible to get here from any corner of the world. After taking a shuttle from the airport, leisure and business travelers can book a room in one of the beautiful Charleston luxury hotels. As expected, the guests will benefit from any amenity they can think of, making their stay very comfortable.

Other ways of arriving here include the car, the bus and the train. Charleston can be easily reached by any of these means of transport, as it has Amtrak and Greyhound stations and it is connected to the US Highway 17. If you cannot decide whether to explore the city by car or on foot, you should know that both of these are excellent options. Public transportation, along with the tour bus or carriage, are also great choices when exploring the city.

As it is an old city, Charleston features numerous historic attractions. You can start the tour with The Battery and White Point Gardens and continue with Charleston Museum. If you are interested in such tourist attractions, make sure you book a room in one of the Charleston luxury hotels found nearby. Next, you can visit the National Monument of Fort Sumter where the Civil War started. The French Quarter is famous for its historic architecture, art galleries and two impressive churches, St. Philip's Church and French Huguenot Church. Besides these two, there are several other historic places of worship, such as the First Presbyterian Church and the Trinity United Methodist Church. All of these can be visited by tourists.

If you are visiting Charleston for the first time, make sure to take a carriage tour. This is certainly a good way of exploring the historical sites of the city. Be aware that these tours are not operated by a single group. Free tourist maps and guides sometimes feature discount coupons for such tours, so make sure to check those out too. Finally, you are recommended to visit the beautiful beaches near Charleston, a relaxing way to finish any vacation.
